Brian Boru Millennium
August 18 – 24, 2014
The Irish Harp Centre invites you to a glorious week of festivities befitting a ‘High King’s Millennium’, featuring Ireland’s emblem, the Irish Harp. Concerts, musical sessions, and workshops throughout the week will culminate with a massed harp orchestra performing Janet Harbison’s new work, “Brian Boru, Lion of Ireland”, that has been specially composed for the festival and will be accompanied by choirs and bagpipes.
Brian Boru was himself a harp player, and Ireland’s national emblem – the magnificently crafted 14th Century Brian Boru Harp, now located in Trinity College Dublin, was for many years, residing with the ‘Recorder of Limerick’ in Castleconnell, the home of the Irish Harp Centre. In the 1770s, the renowned harper Arthur O’Neill restrung the instrument and performed ‘Brian Boru’s March’ while parading through Limerick City to the delight of the throngs of people lining the streets.
